Nigerians angry at oil pollution double standards - CNN.com: "'The whole world is trembling and even the president of America had to do a personal visit to the site. The U.S. will have put serious measures in place to stop such situations happening in the future,' said Ken Tebe -- a local environmental activist who is visibly shaken by what he regards as a double standard.
'It's funny because we've been dealing with this problem for 50 years. I even heard BP will pay $20 billion in damages (for the U.S. spill). When will such hope come to the Niger Delta?' Tebe asked."
BARREL OF MONKEYS: "GENESIS" in Reverse
I consider myself a Democrat. Been called a Socialist. Definitely a bleeding heart liberal.
As a child from a traditional southern family, playing Barrel of Monkeys on the floor, church every Sunday, doing well in public school, learning a trade; in every sense privileged .........
Comfortable in middle age, an avid news reader, on learning the tragic story of a full grown chimpanzee destroying the face of a woman who offered a toy, only trying to help it's owner coax her surrogate child back into his cage......
Today being confrontational, ribald, offensive, restless, rebellious.......
How did I get here from there?

Iraq withdrawal: Barack Obama formally brings war to an end
Iraq withdrawal: Barack Obama formally brings war to an end World news The Guardian: "'Three and a half years ago very few believed the surge could take us to where we are today in Iraq, and there were plenty of reasons for doubts,' Gates said. He said the civilian and military leadership opted for a path that they believed stood the best chance of achieving national security objectives.
Like others in the Obama administration, Gates cautioned against 'premature victory parades or self-congratulations'.
Noting the failure of the Iraqis to form a government and the continued violence, he said: 'I am not saying that all is, or necessarily will be, well in Iraq.'"
FLASHBACK:
First Gulf war 1990-91
Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, claiming it is part of Iraq. A US-led coalition launched Operation Desert Storm and quickly defeated the Iraqi army. President George Bush Snr said: 'Kuwait is liberated. Iraq's army is defeated. Our military objectives are met'

Rep. Mike Ross Raises Eyebrows With Healthy Haul - ProPublica
Rep. Mike Ross Raises Eyebrows With Healthy Haul - ProPublica: "Arkansas Rep. Mike Ross -- a Blue Dog Democrat playing a key role in the health care debate -- sold a piece of commercial property in 2007 for substantially more than a county assessment (PDF) and an independent appraisal (PDF) say it was worth. The buyer: an Arkansas-based pharmacy chain with a keen interest in how the debate plays out."
"Two months after the 2007 sale, LaFrance's (the buyer) concerns about health care reform were spelled out in an article in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
'Universal health care will ruin our health care in America,' LaFrance told the reporter. 'There'll be long lines, they won't be able to get treated, potential doctors will be afraid to go into medical school, there will be an outflux of doctors -- in my opinion. It's not broke and don't fix it.'
Describing the drug industry as 'very big business,' he said the high prices charged for prescription drugs are possible only because insurance companies and the government underwrite about 95 percent of the cost.
'So when the customer pays $7, $10, $15, $20' for a prescription co-pay, 'it doesn't hurt him. They don't realize that the insurance company is paying the other $125. That's kind of a double-edged sword; if it wasn't for insurance, the American pharmaceutical industry wouldn't be able to charge the prices it charges today, because the public wouldn't put up with it,' LaFrance told the Democrat-Gazette.
'Our sales are higher, because it affects the top line of sales,' he added. If the government doesn't interfere, there's 'nothing but good days ahead.'"

Does Your Language Shape How You Think? - NYTimes.com
Does Your Language Shape How You Think? - NYTimes.com: "In a different experiment, French and Spanish speakers were asked to assign human voices to various objects in a cartoon. When French speakers saw a picture of a fork (la fourchette), most of them wanted it to speak in a woman’s voice, but Spanish speakers, for whom el tenedor is masculine, preferred a gravelly male voice for it. More recently, psychologists have even shown that “gendered languages” imprint gender traits for objects so strongly in the mind that these associations obstruct speakers’ ability to commit information to memory."
In order to speak a language like Guugu Yimithirr, you need to know where the cardinal directions are at each and every moment of your waking life. You need to have a compass in your mind that operates all the time, day and night, without lunch breaks or weekends off, since otherwise you would not be able to impart the most basic information or understand what people around you are saying. Indeed, speakers of geographic languages seem to have an almost-superhuman sense of orientation. Regardless of visibility conditions, regardless of whether they are in thick forest or on an open plain, whether outside or indoors or even in caves, whether stationary or moving, they have a spot-on sense of direction. They don’t look at the sun and pause for a moment of calculation before they say, “There’s an ant just north of your foot.” They simply feel where north, south, west and east are, just as people with perfect pitch feel what each note is without having to calculate intervals. There is a wealth of stories about what to us may seem like incredible feats of orientation but for speakers of geographic languages are just a matter of course. One report relates how a speaker of Tzeltal from southern Mexico was blindfolded and spun around more than 20 times in a darkened house. Still blindfolded and dizzy, he pointed without hesitation at the geographic directions.

Glenn Beck rewrites civil rights history - CNN.com
Glenn Beck rewrites civil rights history - CNN.com: "George Orwell wrote that 'who controls the past ... controls the future.' Beck and his fans may reclaim a lot more than the legacy of 1960s civil rights this weekend -- unless America's too silent majority is finally ready to start fighting back for our past."
U.S. was born a Christian nation ?
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- Robert Knight disputes ideas in opinion piece by Will Bunch about Glenn Beck, David Barton
- Bunch rejected idea of U.S.' Christian roots, but there's evidence for it, Knight says
- Moses shown on some Supreme Court friezes; some founders wrote of Christian principles
- Knight: U.S. unique in advancing individual rights because of its Christian ethic
U.S. was born a Christian nation - CNN.com: "In the Federalist Papers, No. 51, for example, James Madison wrote, 'But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary.'"
Knight's argument, that the U.S. was born a Christian nation, makes as much sense as intelligent design. Like believing masturbation a sin although nocturnal emissions corrects the difference.
Like a science research paper backwards, the conclusion is written first, followed only by selected evidence that appears to support a predetermined conclusion; showing reckless disregard for any contradictory evidences.

Grappling over meaning of the dream: "'Once he was gone, he became a convenient hero because then you could see him as someone who had raised some criticism about American society, but we, as Americans, had taken care of those flaws,' Carson said. Born-again rebel Don Miller reveals 'best sermon I ever heard' - CNN.com
Born-again rebel Don Miller reveals 'best sermon I ever heard' - CNN.com: "Defining Miller as a conservative or progressive Christian is difficult. He's a bit of both. Miller once ended an interview with a journalist by sharing the Gospel. And he once wrote that in all of his readings, 'I don't find anyone more noble than Jesus.'
But he also attended a Unitarian church where 'they freely and openly accepted everybody the church didn't seem to accept,' he wrote in 'Blue Like Jazz.'
Miller, in fact, has become something of an evangelical rebel.
Critics have dismissed him for being too vague on issues like gay marriage and abortion. Devotion to Jesus, not dogma, is what defines a Christian, Miller wrote in 'Blue Like Jazz.' 'The most important thing that happens within Christian spirituality is when a person falls in love with Jesus.'"

JESUS WAS A LIBERAL
Will agree, Jesus is a hard act to beat. But, that doesn't mean there haven't been many who were just as noble. Believe one can be just as noble without being a christian.
If he really wants to tie christian spirituality to Jesus, then he should be reminded Jesus died a young man living his life as he preached.
Don't think you will find many willing to love him that much.

GLEN GOES A'BANGING ON KING'S DOOR
Glenn Beck rally on Saturday: Whose honor is being restored? - CSMonitor.com: "“It’s the end of August, [and] the big election push will begin next week, and getting people out and involved is what Glenn Beck is all about,” says Larry Farnsworth, former speechwriter for Republican ex-House Speaker Dennis Hastert and now vice president of Crosby-Volmer International Communications, a public relations firm. “This is all about making sure his followers in the tea party movement get involved in the election that is just around the corner.”"

DRILL
Like a leader of a drug cartel, surrounded by people disappearing left and right, who finds the trade profitable; as property value in his neighborhood keeps declining.

BIG DOG LITTLE DOG & INVISIBLE SIGNS
"BDLD"
is
veterinary shorthand
for
"DOG FIGHT!"
In the lobby of just about every veterinary hospital, one will see a sign of some sort asking the "care givers", "guardians", (whatever!), of our patients to keep their pets on a leash or in a carrier; their safety in mind, as well as ours.
Many clients, however, seem to think we , "just don't know their pets very well,...... YET!"
Can't think of a single veterinary hospital that doesn't place some type of symbol just inside the folder of pets with difficult owners. One hospital, for example, used an eight within a circle. One takes a deep breath before entering an exam room or picking up the phone when tending to the needs of an
"8 ball"!
I've always said,
"AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WE (VETERINARIANS) SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO GO BACK AND HIT ONE CLIENT!"
If we place a sign in the lobby
warning clients of our rights,
why can't veterinarians be offered, as an option, additional protection to purchase along with basis malpractice insurance?
Fair enough!
"In an article on Governor Elliot Spitzer, Ruben Obrego, a pro-life acivist, says,

PERHAPS RUSSIA'S RICHEST MAN
After watching this video, couldn't help but like this guy. Definitely could not villify him. Except for his wealth, could easily have been your average boy-next-door; one who's spent his whole life behind walls of an exclusive gated community. Very little to not like about him.
MIKHAIL
PROKHOROV
Likes to have fun, obviously ; as seen from his perspective, "like being stressed." Expects his companions to enjoy themselves as well. Surely they do; even faking orgasms just to be invited back.
Be stupid for anyone having a bad day to complain, to say no, when invited to join his crowd. FUN'S EXPENSIVE! Would be like kissing a lifetime free meal ticket good bye.
Obviously a people person. Nothing wrong with sharing your good fortune with someone willingly showing you a good time.
You want to villify him, but it seems he's done nothing wrong; played fairly by the rules. Just a risk taker, with an eye for opportunity, being in the right place at the right time; blessed by good fortune.
But,
not knowing where one's.....
two hundred foot yacht
was parked,
JUST TOO MUCH FUN!
How many homeless people you think that yacht could accomodate while he's having fun elsewhere!
Oh well,
didn't complain about paying taxes like
your typical American republican or tea bagger.
Gotta like him for that alone!

TEA PARTY MOVEMENT
Rich Russians like to display their wealth (diamonds, cars and homes)..to bad if they haven?t learn from their own history to help their own citizens and country.
MOTHER TERESA
Mr. Prokhorov, I saw you on CBS "60 Minutes". I enoyed the program and admire your "climb" to success, wealth and security. I respect you, Sir. I am an American mother but have recently met some Russian patients being getting some physical help in the place where I work - because of severe handicaps (they have no legs and one totally beautiful young lady also has no arms below her elbow). They will be here only a little longer - and the sadness, in Russia, if they cannot support themselves (I hear) -- and having no one else to support them - they will be put in some sort of "home" in your country which will house them - but I hear tell (and literally "hear tell") that these homes are in great great need of finances (with accountabily) to TAKE CARE of there "residents" in a decent and human way. I personally feel so sad that the three teenagers I have come to love (not know really well, but admire their courage so very much) in the place where I work will (most probably) end up in one of these homes when they go back to your country. I am not saying where I work because I do not want to break any confidentiality...or any possibilties thereof. SO, would you have one of your business people personally (for you) look into these "homes" for adult children who have no PROOF that they can and will be an ASSET to your country --- because I(to my knowledge) they have NO VOICE to defend themselves. Please consider ME their VOICE. I pray you read this email (for a start) ... I pray for a start. Bless you - bless us all, -Xxxx Xxxxxx, Plano, Texas-.

SEVENTY-TWO VIRGINIANS
Abu al-Zarqawi died,
George Washington
met him at the Pearly Gates.
He slapped him across the face and yelled,
'How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped conceive!'
Patrick Henry
approached, punched him in the nose and shouted,
'You wanted to end our liberties but you failed!'
James Madison
followed, kicked him in the groin and said,
'This is why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!'
Thomas Jefferson
was next, beat Al-Zarqawi with a long cane and snarled
'It was Evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence.'
The beatings and thrashings continued as
George Mason, James Monroe and 66 other early Americans
unleashed their anger on the terrorist Leader.
As Al-Zarqawi lay bleeding and in pain, an Angel appeared.
Al-Zarqawi wept and said,
'This is not what you promised me.'
The Angel replied,
'I told you there would be
72 Virginians
What did you think I said?'"

Shark in Palm Beach Shores killed for trophy
Shark in Palm Beach Shores killed for trophy: "A Pennsylvania couple on Monday landed the trophy they'd come to Florida for: a nine-foot scalloped hammerhead shark. But not everyone was filled with the same sense of accomplishment.
"What would compel someone to kill this beautiful and endangered animal for absolutely no good reason?"
The explanation came from Capt. John Krohn of Boomerang Charters, who's run a 44-foot sport-fishing boat since 1980. "It was a good customer of mine. His wife wanted something for the wall.""

Human - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Since 1800, the human population has increased from one billion to over six billion. In 2004, some 2.5 billion out of 6.3 billion people (39.7%) lived in urban areas, and this percentage is expected to continue to rise throughout the 21st century. In February 2008, the U.N. estimated that half the world's population will live in urban areas by the end of the year. Problems for humans living in cities include various forms of pollution and crime, especially in inner city an suburban slums.
Humans have had a dramatic effect on the environment. As humans are rarely preyed upon, they have been described as superpredators. Currently, through land development, combustion of fossil fuels and pollution, humans are thought to be the main contributor to global climate change. Human activity is believed to be a major contributor to the ongoing Holocene extinction event, which is a form of mass extinction. If this continues at its current rate it is predicted that it will wipe out half of all species over the next century."
GLOBAL WARMING SKEPTIC, TEA PARTY MOVEMENT, & "GILLIGAN!"
Op-Ed Columnist - The Billionaires Bankrolling the Tea Party - NYTimes.com: "The New Yorker article stirred up the right, too. Some of Mayer’s blogging detractors unwittingly upheld the premise of her article (titled “Covert Operations”) by conceding that they have been Koch grantees. None of them found any factual errors in her 10,000 words. Many of them tried to change the subject to George Soros, the billionaire backer of liberal causes. But Soros is a publicity hound who is transparent about where he shovels his money. And like many liberals — selflessly or foolishly, depending on your point of view — he supports causes that are unrelated to his business interests and that, if anything, raise his taxes."
Published this picture (stumbled upon while surfing the Internet) long before deciding to pair with this article which only made slight reference to the global warming debate.
Can't help but feel that "global warming skeptics" and members of
THE TEA PARTY MOVEMENT are guilty of too easily allowing themselves to be lead astray, unknowingly or not, by anyone with an argument that helps deny a crisis of their making even exist or allows them less guilt while continuing habits considered responsible as predictions for inaction grows even more dire.
Even though there is a consensus among scientist, human activity is the most likely catalyse for this global warming cycle,
just the wording alone gives anyone with purely selfish motives, consciously or not, an excuse to deny or believe sacrifice not needed; especially when one will not get to enjoy the returns on his sacrifice... personally!
As the saying goes,"MONEY
IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL."
Even money one inherits from the investments of profits made fair and square....legally!
Assuming,
no money needing to exchange hands, if I had to decide between believing a scientist who thought man 90% most likely the cause of global warming and a businessman who thought no action needed, man falling 10% short of being proven responsible for global warming, I'm placing my bet on the scientist.
But then again.....what would be the point of me doing so if no one willing to bet
against me?
This isn't GILLIGAN'S ISLAND!
Homo Sapien....Doctor of Veterinary Medicine?
HOMO SAPIEN, DVM
Assuming primary focus "had been" the health of the pet, would suggest a career in veterinary medicine if one truly desires to learn just how detached from reality the human race has become as a species.
Nothing exposes the dark side of human nature better than being or observing veterinarians having to navigate the great divide between doing what was in the animal's best interest (if even that can be agreed upon) and having to satisfy, within budgets, the needs of emotional, as well as libel prone, pet owners from a nation full of prophet worshiping, pleasure seeking, wealth building citizens; as well as a lifestyle of their own to support.
In rare cases, would I believe anyone claiming the pet's well being takes priority over our petty needs. Then again, met far too many clients shopping around for veterinarians with agreeable opinions and veterinarians willingly filling a legally profit turning void.
Having said that; there is no such thing as
responsible pro-life breeders.

Inside the Minds of Animals-TIME: "Humans have a fraught relationship with beasts. They are our companions and our chattel, our family members and our laborers, our household pets and our household pests. We love them and cage them, admire them and abuse them
Our dodge — a not unreasonable one — has always been that animals are ours to do with as we please simply because they don't suffer the way we do. They don't think, not in any meaningful way. They don't worry. They have no sense of the future or their own mortality. They may pair-bond, but they don't love. For all we know, they may not even be conscious. 'The reason animals do not speak as we do is not that they lack the organs,' René Descartes once said, 'but that they have no thoughts.' For many people, the Bible offers the most powerful argument of all. Human beings were granted 'dominion over the beasts of the field,' and there the discussion can more or less stop"

Eye-opener: Have you changed your mind on Tebow? - Game On!
"As he tells USA TODAY's Jon Saraceno 'I love it when someone tells me I cannot do something.'"
"Alongside his mother, Pam, they'll tell the story of Tim's birth: how Pam's pregnancy was threatened by a tropical disease (the family was living in the Philippines, as missionaries), doctors told her to abort the child, and she refused. And now look at her kid: Heisman winner, preacher, Christian heartthrob. At a press conference last week, Tebow said that he's
'always been very convicted' about the wrongness of abortion 'because that's the reason I'm here.'"
What is the end? It's not just stopping abortions. Tebow wants to convert people, like his father does in Muslim areas of the Philippines. Until now, he's been subtle in his outreach, pushing his message gently, painting "PHIL 4:13" and "JOHN 3:16" and "MARK 8:36" in his eye black—an ingenious touch that prods even the most degenerate couch potato into Googling Bible verses out of curiosity.

Disincentivizing greed
Agreed wholeheartedly with every point this article made.
It wasn't enough for the rich to be rich. Human nature being what it is, they had to be super-rich. Or put another way, tax cuts, including the Bush tax cuts, fed some of the worst aspects of human nature and led to some of the worst excesses. It was just a matter of time before Wall Street went wild.
"Financial reform must take into account human nature — investment bankers enjoy being rich(er) — or it will fail."
"BUT, BUT, BUT....,!"
Could hear the REPUBLICANS fussing as I continued reading,
"Clinton this...! Clinton that...!"
Although most with limited vocabulary,
(some even worse than mine)
"HIGH INTEREST RATES and GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS are DISINCENTIVES to INVESTMENTS!"
Crying in unison with their "talking points".
"DEMOCRATS!"
And I hadn't even finished reading the article as the author presented his argument!
You are absolutely
"RIGHT!"
"HE"
did excuse
"CLINTON,",
although not Bush or Regan,
from responsibility for their participation in the policy making leading up to the Wall Street Crisis.
The general verdict is that Glass-Steagall worked. Until its repeal in 1999, when President Clinton caved to pressures from Republicans who felt regulation inhibited competition and from Democrats — such as Clinton's own Treasury secretary, Robert (R?)ubin — who felt that the law was a vestige of another era.
Well there it is!
"THEPROOF!"
"Clinton!"
YEP!
(Eyes rolling up into my head)
"Responsible for the Wall Street mess!"
YES HE MOST CERTAINLY DID EXCUSE CLINTON!
American Thinker: The Left's Pied Piper: "Meanwhile, the Republican Party wisely accepted their well-earned title as the Party of No and avoided the stench of the congressional liberal elitists, who believe so strongly in their own ideology that they've willfully ignored the will of the people for their own satisfaction."

Not necessarily a huge mistake,
